Combined Federal Campaign: Spotlight on EVAWI’s Work with the Military!

Advanced Sexual Assault Investigations Course at Fort Leonard Wood

Did you know EVAWI partners with the military, to improve the criminal justice and community response to violence against women? We thought we would provide just a couple of examples.

Sexual Assault Investigations Course

EVAWI staff regularly provides training at Ft. Leonard Wood and the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC), as part of the US Army Military Police School’s Advanced Sexual Assault investigations Course.  Originally offered on a quarterly basis, demand has been so high it will be offered nine times in 2013.  The course was developed by Russell Strand, chief of the Family Advocacy Law Enforcement Training Division, in collaboration with a team of national experts.  It combines cutting edge information with opportunities for practical application, offering some of the best instruction available for investigators and prosecutors from all branches of the military.

2012 Visionary Award Given to Russell Strand

EVAWI recently bestowed our Visionary Award on Russell Strand, a retired US Army Special Agent (Criminal Investigation Division) and current Chief of the Family Advocacy Law Enforcement Training Division at the U.S. Army Military Police School.  He received the award at our 2012 International Conference on Sexual Assault, Domestic Violence, and Stalking in San Diego, California.

Mr. Strand was recognized for his long career of dedicated service to the women, men, and children who are victims of violence, as well as the training program that he originally developed for the Army’s Criminal Investigation Division -- but now draws investigators and prosecutors from all branches of the military as well as civilian agencies.  Strand has particularly focused on developing an interview strategy referred to as the Forensic Experiential Trauma Interview (or FETI).  This training program and the FETI approach have created visible change in the U.S. military’s response to sexual assault, by helping investigators and prosecutors gather the information they need to hold offenders accountable.  It now serves as a model for best practices within the military, and in civilian agencies around the world.

To support our work, federal employees and members of the military can donate through the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC).  In case you are unfamiliar with the CFC, it is the U.S. federal government’s workplace giving program. The CFC presents an opportunity for federal employees and military personnel to contribute to the charities and causes they believe in.

EVAWI’s Designation # is 11400. For more information, please see our CFC page.  The Campaign Locator will assist you in identifying the CFC program that is located in your geographic area.

Thank You
It takes financial resources to create a world where gender-based violence is unacceptable, perpetrators are held accountable, and victims receive the compassion, support, and justice they deserve.

Even if you are unable to make a financial contribution, you can support our mission by spreading the word and engaging people in conversations about these difficult topics.
On behalf of criminal justice and community professionals who receive critical training and assistance that would not otherwise be available, as well as the survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, and stalking, who receive a better response as a result, we express our heartfelt appreciation.
