Tomorrow is the 4th of
July. As an advocate, I used to dread this holiday, and really, all holidays
for that matter. Holidays bring people together, often involve drinking, and
unfortunately seem to bring an increase in the volume of hotline calls and
requests for advocacy. To add even more stress, holiday shifts are THE hardest
shifts to fill.
I know from talking to my cohorts
from law enforcement and SAFE programs that they were never very excited about
holiday weekends either.
How do we manage these holidays?
Crossing our fingers, and hoping for a quiet shift? That obviously doesn’t
work.
We want to hear from you, whatever professional
discipline you represent. How do you, and your multidisciplinary teams, get
through holidays? Post a comment here, or on our Facebook page. Maybe we can
come up with some good ideas to help each other out…
Who does the “I” refer to in these blogs? I am an advocate
and an educator. I’ve worked in the field of violence against women for over 10
years, as an educator, sexual assault advocate, domestic violence advocate, and
an advocate within the military. I have extensive experience working with multiple
Sexual Assault Response and Resource Teams, as well as establishing sexual
assault programs in rural communities.

What a sad comment. I never thought of it that way, however I do remember hearing somewhere that abuse calls go up on Superbowl day. Thank you for being there to help, giving up time with your family to help others. Let's be aware and thankful for what is going on behind the scenes, so someone is there heaven forbid we may need them.
